Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice (INPJ)

Much of our work focused on protecting the Pretrial Fairness Act during the last round of negotiations and amendments, while also protecting incumbent legislators who voted in favor of the legislation during an election year that saw fear mongering and misinformation driven by conservative billionaires.

THE CHALLENGE

While the opposition was backed by billionaires (Dick Uihlein) and millionaires (Dan Proft) who funded a deluge of racist misinformation, including TV ads and fake political mailers designed to look like real newspapers, INPJ did not have a paid media budget.

THE SOLUTION

Our strategy resulted in over 107 media placements stories between Aug. 17, 2022 and Dec. 30, 2022.

SGS successfully fought back through aggressive earned media and reporter relationships to force a conversation about the opposition’s misinformation tactics and to repeatedly correct the record and promote INPJ’s core message about pretrial fairness.

THE IMPACT

Final adjustments during Veto Session maintained the integrity of the Pretrial Fairness Act, despite opponents’ best efforts to abolish it and destroy its legitimacy in the press.

Despite well-funded attacks based on ending money bond:

  • Illinois Senate Democrats maintained a Super Majority
  • Illinois House Democrats picked up seats.
